For Sale at Auction: 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in Sandy, Utah for sale in Sandy, UT

1 of 19
Vehicle Description 1979 Pontiac Macho Trans Am VIN:
2W87K9L193982 The Firebird and the Trans Am are two of Pontiac's most iconic nameplates.
The Firebird became notorious during the golden muscle car era as Pontiac's take on the Chevy Camaro.
The Trans Am name was first used as a performance and appearance package in 1969 and then became a trim level.
The Pontiac ruled the roadways in their prime, but by the late 70's, the Pontiac was losing its standing.
Meacham Motors near Phoenix, Arizona was the birthplace of the Macho T/A.
Dennis and Kyle Mecham were disappointed in the performance of the 1977 Trans Am, which lost the 455-cubic-inch V8 in favor of a milder 400.
So they did a bunch of hot-rodder tricks-fussed with the jetting, opened up the intake, and swapped in some headers-to restore the performance.
The cars were sold as used vehicles to get around Federal emissions regulations.
The Macho T/A name was a nod to the popularity of the word macho at the time.
Produced through 1979, an estimated 325 Macho T/As were produced.
The car presented at auction is one of only 98 Macho T/As in 1979, the final year of production and features the following:
