Job Description
Mechanical Designer Duties
Start of projects typically by meeting with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand the needs and requirements for a new product or mechanical system. For example, working on a project to create an autonomic vehicle may consult engineers regarding which structural materials to use or clients regarding cleanroom requirements. Once materials and specifications have been determined, designer begin using CAD software to plan and develop models. This may include testing and modifying models under different conditions, such as temperature or humidity.
Once a preliminary model is set, responsibility for presenting it to a project engineer. If the model is approved, then finalization of designs and sending prints to the production department.
Responsibilities
Other duties may include reproducing and archiving designs:
Development of designs for mechanical devices, equipment and FAB layouts
Handling, robotic, gripping, FAB automation, cleanroom concepts / cleanroom design
Collaboration with engineers and other professionals to create or improve manufacturing systems or processes (collaboration with the electrical and software design department)
Interface definitions
Mechanical and structure calculations (FEM)
Material options or other needs related to the product
Material flow analysis to maximize output yield.
Logistical analysis to define throughput, bottleneck, and optimization
Setting and reviewing of specifications and other data to develop mechanical layouts and drafts.
Qualifications
Travel to job sites or factories to measure physical dimensions for machinery and observe production lines
Topics may range from designing of layouts, equipment, machinery parts like fasteners and clutches, to analyzing material strengths and stress factors
Computer Aided Design, 3-dimensional design of mechanical devices and equipment, including system calculations and project budgets to finalize the product design
