Job Description

Pay: Dependent on Experience, certifications, and administrative skils. We are hiring both level I and II instructors.
Purpose:
(Winter) Teach adaptive, alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledge hockey in winter months. (Summer) Teach hiking skills, handcycling, bicycling, adventure studies, orienteering and related activities in summer months to children and adults with special needs.
Position Functions / Areas of Responsibility
1. Assessing the immediate needs of student and setting up progression for particular student. Including specifics of disability and special needs or things to watch out for with disability. Making sure there is open communication between instructor and parent, counselor or facility so nothing is missed.
2. Teach skills related to winter and summer activities to children and adults with special needs, building self-esteem and self-worth.
3. Communication of skills with student, using alternative methods for communication when applicable.
4. Communication with counselors or facility
5. Perfecting one's own skill level of teaching and skiing.
6. Positive attitude even in the most adverse conditions. Being more than just an instructor to the student. Becoming a friend, being sensitive to their disability and how it affects their mental state. Building self-esteem through positive skill development. Setting realistic goals, which change with every student.
7. Travel: Occasional trips to Salt Lake Valley.
Interactions
1. Direct and continuous contact with guests.
2. Direct and continuous contact with co-workers, management, and other departments.
3. Must have the ability to interact at any time with guests and other employees in a pleasant manner and maintain good working relationships with others and all departments at Snowbird.
4. Internal Contact: Will be working in a group and also as a private instructor. Direct contact with other departments including Mountain Operations, Mountain School, Conference Services and Marketing.
5. External Contacts: Interaction with many hospitals, recreational centers, children and their families with special needs. Interaction with private foundations, corporations and media.
Education & Experience Requirements
1 High School Diploma or equivalent required.
2 College degree in related field preferred with emphases on recreation, physical therapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, web design and social media. Related work experience may be substituted for education
Specific Requirements:
1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Must be able to ski or snowboard and have the ability to pass a physical capacity screening, prior teaching experience desired
3. Food Handler Permit
4.(Winter and Summer) Work related experience with children and adults with special needs or summer camp activities. Must have worked in a business and administrative setting.
6. Must have Alpine Ski teaching experience or PSIA certification.
Skills & Knowledge
Technical: Teach skiing and snowboarding following the P.S.I.A. Alpine and Snowboarding Technical Manual. Must be willing to learn how to teach skiing with the use of adaptive ski equipment, snowshoe equipment and sledge hockey equipment in the winter months and a variety of adaptive sporting equipment during the spring, summer and fall.
Administrative: Organizational and communications skills required.
Computer skills: MS Word, Excel and Power Point, and InDesign. Candidate will also be responsible for social media and website updates.
Working Conditions
Work Schedule:
1. Shifts vary, may be early morning or late evening, weekends, holidays, depending on business levels.
2. Specific Shift: Approximately Monday - Saturday 9:45 AM- 4:00 PM, 3-4 days per week, approximately 5-6 hours a day.
Mental:
1. Must be prepared to stay overnight if necessary on occasional times of road closures.
2. May experience unusual stress from high business volumes, deadlines, continual work with public, winter conditions, snow night requirements and commuting to/from Snowbird.
3. May experience mental and physical stress when working with some children and adults with special needs, usually when student is scared or unfamiliar with surroundings; supervisor will make aware of circumstances.
Physical:
1. Must be able to lift 50 -200 lbs - with assistance, in some instances if working with an adaptive ski device.
2. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
3. Must demonstrate ability to bend, kneel, handle, reach, grasp and perform repetitive motions.
4. Work is outdoors and requires constant exposure to cold and other extreme weather conditions.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
